Tragic Scooter Fire in Ely, MN Leads to Woman’s Death

A tragedy occurred in Ely, Minnesota, on Monday when an 80-year-old woman died after sustaining injuries in a fire involving her motorized mobility scooter. Initial reports indicate that the scooter fire, which occurred outside the Boundary Waters Care Center, may have been initially started by a cigarette. It was not clear if the cigarette belonged to the victim or another person near her.

Emergency responders were called to the scene at 4:38 p.m. after a witness reported that the woman’s scooter had caught fire. Witness recounted that the woman was engulfed in flames before care center staff could intervene. Despite being airlifted to Duluth for treatment, the woman tragically passed away due to critical burn injuries. Additionally, a staff member sustained non-life-threatening injuries while attempting to rescue the victim. The incident is currently under investigation by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s office.

Based on our experience with fires similar to what was described here, bottled oxygen may have increased the fire risk. Another possible contributing factor could be the batteries found in the mobility scooter. When fires occur near lithium ion batteries that are not properly designed, they can burst into flames themselves. There are grave dangers associated with battery fires in motorized devices like scooters and e-bikes that have inadequately protected batteries.

The Dangers of Lithium-Ion Battery Fires

Lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in motorized scooters, are efficient but if the batteries have defective heat protections or are used in a device that has defects, there can be huge risks. If a defect leads to the batteries overheating, it can cause a phenomenon known as thermal runaway, where the battery’s internal temperature rapidly increases, causing the battery itself to catch fire or even explode. Once a fire involves a lithium-ion battery, it can become even more hazardous due to:

  • High Heat: Battery fires burn at extremely high temperatures, making them difficult to extinguish with conventional methods.
  • Toxic Smoke: The fires release harmful chemicals, posing additional risks to anyone nearby.
  • Unpredictable Behavior: Once a fire starts, it can spread quickly and reignite even after being put out.

In cases involving battery-powered devices like scooters, manufacturing defects, improper charging, or physical damage to the battery can lead to catastrophic failures. This underscores the importance of rigorous safety standards for battery-powered devices and diligent investigation following incidents like the one in Ely.
