Tragic Scooter Fire in Ely, MN Leads to Woman’s Death

A tragedy occurred in Ely, Minnesota, on Monday when an 80-year-old woman died after sustaining injuries in a fire involving her motorized mobility scooter. Initial reports indicate that the scooter fire, which occurred outside the Boundary Waters Care Center, may have been initially started by a cigarette. It was not clear if the cigarette belonged to the victim or another person near her.

Emergency responders were called to the scene at 4:38 p.m. after a witness reported that the woman’s scooter had caught fire. Despite being airlifted to Duluth for treatment, the woman tragically passed away due to critical burn injuries.
