The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is working to identify the food sources of two Listeria outbreaks that have sickened more than 70 people. One investigation (A) was opened on December 26, 2024, the other (B) was opened on January 15, 2025. The agency hasn’t released much information about the outbreaks except the number of illnesses and that a traceback investigation, facility inspection, and product sampling have been initiated for both.
Symptoms of a Listeria Infection
Listeria can cause severe illness and death. Among pregnant women, it can cause miscarriage or stillbirth even if the expectant mother experiences only mild flu-like symptoms. People over 65 and those with weakened immune systems are also at high risk.
Symptoms of a Listeria infection usually appear within 24 hours of exposure but sometimes they can take as long as 70 days to develop. They include:
- Severe headache
- High fever, stiff neck, and other muscle aches
- Upset stomach and diarrhea
- Loss of balance, confusion, and convulsions
2024 Listeria Outbreaks Investigated by the FDA
