Tragic Loss of 6-Year-Old Boy at New Jersey Day Camp Raises Safety Concerns

On a day that should have been filled with summer fun, a 6-year-old boy’s life was cut short in a devastating drowning incident at Liberty Lake Day Camp in Mansfield Township, New Jersey. This tragedy should never have happened and highlights the urgent need for stronger child safety protocols, proper supervision, and preventative measures to keep children safe while swimming at summer camp.

Six-year-old Michael Stewart, a rising first-grade student at Lumberton School District, was attending Liberty Lake Day Camp as part of a program for students with special needs. Reports indicate that despite the presence of lifeguards and an assigned adult advocate, Michael was found unresponsive in a shallow pool during the camp’s afternoon swim period. Michael was transported to Virtua Hospital in Mount Holly where sadly he later died. Michael’s tragic death has left a community in mourning, prompting a wave of support for the Stewart family in their time of grief. The Lumberton Police Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 201 has set up a GoFundMe for the family, and the Lumberton School District will host a lemonade stand fundraiser at the Old Fire House on Main Street on Saturday, June 29th.

As a parent who has experienced the unimaginable tragedy of losing a child to a swimming pool drowning, you may be feeling overwhelmed and unsure about what steps to take next. While no legal action can ever replace the loss of your precious child, pursuing a wrongful death lawsuit may help prevent similar tragedies from happening to other families and provide some measure of justice for your loss.

It’s important to know that you have legal rights, and it’s the job of a lawyer to guide you through this difficult process. An experienced attorney can help determine if you have grounds for a lawsuit and handle the legal complexities while you focus on healing.
