Three people were injured after the squad car veered into the wrong lane and struck an oncoming SUV at the intersection of Deer Street and Oak Avenue. Aitkin County Sheriff’s Deputy Dylan Jindra was heading north on Deer Street when he entered the southbound lane and struck a Honda Pilot head-on. The Honda’s occupants, 58-year-old Joselito Tan Burgos and 42-year-old Jennifer Jean Burgos were transported to Riverwood Health Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Deputy Jindra was also taken to the hospital. Investigators are looking into what caused the deputy to enter oncoming traffic.

Police Car Accident Lawsuit Information
The number of crashes involving law enforcement vehicles has been climbing at an alarming rate. A recent USA Today investigation found that from 2013 to 2021, hundreds of police car crashes resulted in permanent injuries to victims. Dozens of lawsuits alleged that these police car crashes were caused by careless mistakes like speeding and distracted driving. The growing use of SUVs for patrol vehicles is another risk factor, as the size and weight of these vehicles could lead to more severe injuries and deaths in the event of a crash.
Pedestrians are especially vulnerable in collisions with squad cars, facing a high risk of serious or fatal injuries. In 2021, according to data from the National Safety Council, 198 people died in crashes involving emergency vehicles, with pedestrians accounting for 25 percent of those fatalities. Just this March in Saint Paul, Minnesota, a Metro Transit police officer struck a pedestrian at the intersection of 6th Street East and Robert Street North. The woman was transported to Regions Hospital for treatment.
