Salmonella Recall for Quaker Chewy Granola Bars, Dipps, Cereal [Update]

Updated July 12, 2024, with FDA warning letter, plant closure The Danville, IL plant that produced Quaker chewy granola bars recalled for Salmonella in December 2023 first detected the strain in the facility at least three years before the recall, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warning letter.

Whole genome sequencing tests confirm that the same strain of Salmonella Cubano was found in the facility on several occasions between 2020 and 2023, indicating the company’s corrective actions failed. The strain does not match other food, environmental, or clinical isolates in the national database. This means the strain is unique to the facility and people who have gotten sick from the product have not had the kind of lab tests that can be uploaded to that database.

After the recall, which was expanded twice in January 2024, the company halted production at the 55-year-old plant and permanently closed it on June 8, 2024, saying the cost of modernizing the plant wasn’t feasible.
