Whole genome sequencing tests performed on Salmonella cultured from outbreak patients showed they were sickened by the same strain. This indicates that they had a common exposure.

During interviews with health officials, patients were asked about foods they ate before they became ill. Several patients were part of clusters of illness linked to restaurants. When people who aren’t related get sick after eating at the same restaurant or shopping at the same store it helps investigators discover where the contaminated food was sold. Using this information the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection traced the restaurants’ egg supplier to Milo’s Poultry Farms.

Salmonella was found at the farm and WGS confirmed it matched the outbreak strain.
