Three people who stayed at the Roaring River Lodge and RV Park in Cassville, MO in July developed Legionnaires’ disease, a severe, often fatal form of pneumonia, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS). People get Legionnaires’ disease when they inhale water droplets contaminated with Legionella bacteria.

DHSS collected environmental and water samples from the resort, located at 23359 State Highway 112 in Cassville, and preliminary results indicate the presence of Legionella bacteria in the water system. DHSS is working with Roaring River Lodge to correct the problem and the resort is contacting recent visitors.
Symptoms of Legionnaires’ Disease
Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease, which usually develop within two weeks of exposure, are similar to the flu. They include:
- Muscle aches
- Fever
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
- Headache
Current and former smokers, people over 50, and people with weakened immune systems are at elevated risk for Legionnaires’ disease. Most people with this infection require hospitalization. About 10 percent of cases are fatal.
Most healthy people exposed to Legionella do not get sick. However, an individual’s risk may increase if they are 50 years or older, smoke cigarettes, or have certain medical conditions, such as a weakened immune system.
