A Legionnaires’ Disease outbreak at the Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel includes at least two guests. The hotel sent a letter notifying guests that Legionella, the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease, has been found in the hotel’s water supply and warning them to take the following precautions:
- Don’t take a shower, take a bath instead. Fill the tub slowly and minimize your time in the bathroom while the water is running.
- It’s okay to brush your teeth and wash your hands. If you wash dishes, fill the sink slowly to avoid
splashing and producing water droplets in the air. - It’s okay to drink cold water from the tap and to heat cold water to make coffee or tea. You cannot get Legionnaires’ disease by drinking water.
- Never use tap water in CPAP machines, other respiratory therapy equipment or humidifiers.
The hotel is working with the City of Elizabeth Department of Health and Human Services and the New Jersey Department of Health to determine the source of contamination.
Symptoms of Legionnaires’ Disease
If you have recently stayed at the hotel. Monitor yourself for symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease including:
- Fever
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
- Headache
- Muscle aches
These symptoms usually appear within two weeks of exposure. Most people who get Legionnaires’ disease require hospitalization. About 10 percent of cases are fatal.
