A deadly Salmonella outbreak linked to Malichita brand cantaloupe imported from Mexico has ended with 407 illnesses, 158 hospitalizations, and six deaths. The melons were sold whole under the Malichita and Rudy brand names and cut under other brand names at stores including Walmart, Sam’s Club, Kroger, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, ALDI, and Kwik Trip.
Illnesses were reported in the U.S. and Canada. Recalls for whole and cut melon were issued.

Cantaloupe Salmonella Outbreak
Between October 15, 2023, to December 25, 2023, 407 people from 44 states became ill, and 158 were hospitalized. Six people died. The patients range in age from 1 to 100 years old, 52 of them lived at long-term care facilities and 44 were children who attended childcare centers.
The number of cases reported from each state is: Alaska (1), Arizona (15), Arkansas (2), California (56), Colorado (11), Connecticut (2), Florida (4), Georgia (8), Illinois (22), Indiana (9), Iowa (12), Kansas (2), Kentucky (10), Maryland (9), Massachusetts (2), Michigan (7), Minnesota (29), Mississippi (1), Missouri (15), Montana (3), Nebraska (7), Nevada (5), New Hampshire (1), New Jersey (8), New Mexico (2), New York (14), North Carolina (7), North Dakota (1), Ohio (14), Oklahoma (4), Oregon (8), Pennsylvania (5), Rhode Island (1), South Carolina (10), South Dakota (2), Tennessee (7), Texas (30), Utah (12), Vermont (1), Virginia (8), Washington (4), West Virginia (3), Wisconsin (29), and Wyoming (1).
In Canada, 164 illnesses, 61 hospitalizations, and seven deaths were reported. This outbreak is linked to two strains of Salmonella – Sundvsall and Oranienburg. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency found these strains in Malichita brand cantaloupes.
Symptoms of Salmonella Infection
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection usually develop within six to 72 hours of exposure. They include nausea, fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea that can be bloody.
