Jack & the Green Sprouts Listeria Recall

Jack and the Bean Sprouts of River Falls, WI has issued a Listeria recall for alfalfa sprouts and alfalfa onion sprouts. Consumers who have purchased these products should not eat them as Listeria can cause severe illness and death. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.

On December 11, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the recalled sprouts were linked to an outbreak that sickened four people.

  • Alfalfa sprouts and onion alfalfa sprouts sold at grocery stores and co-ops in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

Symptoms of a Listeria Infection

Symptoms of a Listeria infection, called listeriosis, usually develop within 24 hours of exposure but can sometimes take as long as 70 days to appear. They include –

  • Severe headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Muscle aches
  • Upset stomach or diarrhea
  • Loss of balance, confusion, or convulsions
  • Flu-like symptoms in pregnant women

2016 E. coli Outbreak

Listeria, E. coli and Salmonella food poisoning from sprouts is common. In fact, in 2016, Jack & the Green Sprouts alfalfa sprouts were linked to an E. coli outbreak. Eleven people were sickened and two were hospitalized.
