Updated March 6, 2024. A gas leak caused a devastating explosion at a rental house in Monticello, New York, just hours after a family moved in. First responders arriving at 2 Emily Street found the house heavily damaged with the foundation compromised and the structure blown out.
Nine people and two pets were able to evacuate the house when it exploded. One man was transported to Garnet Medical Center in Middletown with severe burn injuries. Ariel Khan, whose family owns the rental house, told CBS News, “Hope they’re doing OK and whoever’s in the hospital is doing OK.”
The Monticello Fire Department says the explosion was caused by a leaking gas line that filled the basement with gas. Investigators say the explosion was likely caused by the propane heating system. Two propane tanks were found behind the house, but it was not clear how full the tanks were before the explosion.
The extensive damage rendered the house uninhabitable, prompting authorities to condemn the property. “About an hour ago we were moving stuff in,” a resident, Harold Ronk, told NBC New York. “Now we can’t get our stuff out because it’s condemned.”
