Symptoms of a Listeria Infection Can Take Weeks to Develop
Listeria can cause severe illness and death. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage or stillbirth even if the expectant mother experiences only mild flu-like symptoms. People who are over 65 and people with weakened immune systems are also at high risk.
Symptoms of a Listeria infection, called listeriosis, usually appear within 24 hours of exposure but sometimes they can take as long as 70 days to develop. They include:
- High fever, stiff neck, and other muscle aches
- Severe headache, loss of balance, confusion, and convulsions
- Upset stomach and diarrhea
