The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to eat Apricot Power brand apricot seeds because they pose a fatal cyanide risk. According to an analysis performed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS), the apricot seeds contain amygdalin, a toxic compound that can cause cyanide poisoning.
The FDA is warning consumers who have eaten any of these products to contact their healthcare provider immediately, even if they were not recently consumed.
The items that pose cyanide risk are:
- Apricot Power – Bitter Apricot Seeds – NGR FY24-015 (California Select) -Net weight 8oz (227g)
- Apricot Power – Seeds Bitter Apricot Seeds – NGR FY24-016 (Organic Turkish Select) – Net weight 8oz (227g)
- Apricot Power – Seeds Bitter Apricot Seeds – NGR FY24-017 (South African Select) – Net weight 16oz (454g)
Symptoms of Cyanide Poisoning
Chronic consumption of food with high concentrations of toxins that can cause cyanide poisoning can cause:
- Impaired eyesight
- Loss of hearing
- Loss of balance
- Sensory or motor nerve dysfunction
Mild-to-moderate symptoms
- Difficulty breathing
- Feeling lightheaded
- Bluish discoloration of the skin or mucous membranes (cyanosis)
- Weakness
Symptoms of Severe Acute Toxicity
- Stupor
- Temporary pauses in breathing
- Abnormal heart rhythm
- Low blood pressure
- Cardiovascular collapse
- Metabolic acidosis
- Seizures
- Coma
- Death
