On Thursday December 19th, a tragic chain-reaction crash involving two semi-trucks and an SUV claimed the life of a 61-year-old Monticello man on Interstate 94 in Clearwater Township, Minnesota.
According to reports, the initial incident occurred around 10:55 p.m. when an eastbound semi jackknifed into the center median of the snow-slicked roadway. An SUV traveling along I-94 then collided with the jackknifed trailer, and a second semi subsequently struck both the first semi and the SUV.
Sadly, the SUV driver, identified as Thomas Victor Pearson, did not survive the collision. Both truck drivers, one from Faribault, MN and the other from New York City, escaped injury. Preliminary information from the Minnesota State Patrol points to hazardous winter conditions as a potential contributing factor in this deadly crash, which is why semi truck drivers must always drive in a manner safe for the conditions they are operating in.
Legal Options After a Fatal Trucking Accident
As a Minnesota-based law firm that has represented individuals and families affected by serious trucking collisions, Pritzker Hageman understands the heartbreak, confusion, and financial hardships that follow a fatal crash. Multi-vehicle semi-truck accidents along busy corridors like I-94 can lead to complex liability issues, especially when winter weather, driver fatigue, maintenance violations, or improper loading may be involved.
Truck accident claims often require thorough investigation, including analysis of electronic logging device (ELD) data, trucking company maintenance records, cargo documentation, and compliance with state and federal trucking regulations. Determining who bears legal responsibility for a deadly semi-truck accident may involve multiple parties, such as:
- The truck drivers and their employers
- Freight companies or brokers
- Vehicle maintenance providers
- Manufacturers of faulty truck components
