Updated August 16, 2024. Four people in an SUV died and three others were injured when a semi-truck slammed into traffic stopped in a construction zone on a northern Minnesota highway. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the chain-reaction crash happened when the semi-truck “struck the stopped vehicles at highway speeds” on Highway 2 near Nelson Road in Arrowhead Township, west of Duluth.
Sadly, all four occupants of an SUV died from their injuries. The victims include 65-year-old Vincent Louis Dow, 65-year-old Bonnie Mae Dow, and nine-year-olds Hope Mae Oakgrove and Charlotte White, all from Blackduck.
A total of ten people were involved in the crash. Two suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash – Kay Burt, an 84-year-old from Grand Rapids, was a passenger in another SUV, while 45-year-old Aldo Escobar Hidalgo of Rochester, was operating a different semi-truck. The semi-driver who caused the crash, 63-year-old Gregory Scott Anwiler of Grand Rapids, was taken to a Duluth hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Truck Crash Lawsuit Information
If you were injured or a loved one was killed in a semi-truck accident, navigating the aftermath can be overwhelming. Understanding your legal options is essential to ensure you receive the support and compensation you deserve during this difficult time. An experienced semi-truck accident lawyer will help you sue the negligent parties who are responsible for your injuries or your loved one’s death, including:
- The unsafe semi-driver who was operating the vehicle.
- The company that owns the truck, trailer, or load.
- The trucking company or freight carrier that was responsible for enforcing safety regulations.
- The manufacturer of any defective equipment used on the truck, such as the air brakes, steering system, lights, and tires.
- The service or maintenance shop that serviced the truck before the accident.
When a death is involved, your family may have a wrongful death claim. While no amount of money could ever make up for your family’s loss, filing a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of your loved one will help provide financial security and justice for your family.
Distracted Truck Drivers Cause Serious Accidents
Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that in 2021, 5,788 people died in traffic crashes involving large trucks, which represents a 75% increase in truck crash fatalities since 2009.
Distracted semi-truck drivers are more likely to cause dangerous chain-reaction crashes. When semi-truck drivers engage in distracting activities like texting, eating, or adjusting in-cab technologies, they may fail to notice slowing traffic or changing road conditions ahead. This can lead to rear-end collisions or lane departure accidents that quickly escalate into multi-vehicle pileups.
