The patients in this outbreak said they first became ill on dates ranging from April 14, 2023, to June 12, 2023. Before they developed symptoms of a Salmonella infection, which include nausea, fever, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea, they reported eating pork cuts cooked at home, fish and crab.
Health officials have conducted traceback investigations, tracing the path of the product from the store where it was purchased to the company that produced it, but they have not yet identifiedthe source.
During the first quarter of fiscal 2023, Salmonella Berta was one of the top 10 Salmonella serotypes found in pork products tested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS). That serotype was not discovered in any samples of chicken, turkey, or beef tested during the same period.
