UPDATED February 10, 2023 – A house explosion in San Francisco’s Outer Sunset neighborhood killed one person and sent two others to the hospital with burn injuries. Around 9:30 AM Thursday, the San Francisco Fire Department responded to a massive explosion and three-alarm house fire at 1734 22nd Avenue. The impact of the explosion was so powerful that it knocked the home off its foundation and damaged the houses on either side. Neighbors reported feeling their homes shake from as far as 20 blocks away. The San Francisco Fire Chief told KTVU News that the city has not seen an explosion of this magnitude since the 90s.
One person was transported to the hospital in serious condition. A firefighter has been hospitalized for minor injuries. Late Thursday, rescue crews found the body of a person who was inside the home when the explosion happened. A neighbor told ABC 7 News that a couple lived in the house with a home nurse.
San Francisco’s Sunset District issued evacuation and shelter-in-place orders for all homes on the 1700 block of 22nd Avenue. As of Friday morning, the order was lifted for all but five residences.
The San Francisco City Supervisor tweeted that natural gas may have caused the explosion. An investigation is underway. Fire officials and PG&E technicians have been on the scene to determine the cause and origin of the explosion.
This is a developing story. The Pritzker Hageman Explosion Legal Team will have the latest updates as new information becomes available.
