Soft Serve on the Go Listeria Outbreak

The Soft Serve on the Go Listeria outbreak includes one illness in New York and another in Pennsylvania. Health officials discovered the outbreak when one of these patients mentioned eating the ice cream before developing symptoms of a Listeria infection including:

  • Severe headache
  • High fever
  • Stiff neck, and other muscle stiffness
  • Nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea
  • Confusion, loss of balance

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) tested unopened Soft Serve on the Go collected from a patient’s home and one of them was positive for Listeria.

On August 22, the New York Department of Agriculture (NYDAM) revealed that Soft Serve on the Go cups collected from the manufacturing facility were positive for Listeria. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) confirmed that the Listeria strain found in these products matched the outbreak strain.

On August 28, Food Poisoning Bulletin, which is sponsored by Pritzker Hageman, was the first to report that Soft Serve on the Go was produced at Ice Cream House, located at 2 Church Ave. in Brooklyn. On August 30, Ice Cream House issued a recall for all of its products.

On September 1, New York health officials announced that they found the outbreak strain of Listeria in environmental samples collected from the Ice Cream House facility and in a novelty ice cream product, a  “mini dessert cigar.”
