Dave Scherping Loses Life in Collision With Pickup Truck
Dave Scherping, 51, of Orrick Township, died June 4 after his motorcycle and a pickup collided on County Road 5 in Sherburne County around 2 p.m. Scherping, a former deputy sheriff in Morrison County and a longtime K-9 handler, was traveling south on County Road 5 when the northbound pickup turned left in front of him. Upon impact Scherping was thrown from his motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The pickup driver, Robert A. Swift, 57, of Becker, was uninjured.
Motorcycle Crashes at Near Record Levels in Minnesota
With 80 reported fatalities, 2022 was the deadliest year for Minnesota motorcyclists since 1985 when 82 deaths were reported. Most fatal crashes occur between the months of May and October, and as we approach the end of the first week in June, a dozen Minnesota motorcyclists have died in crashes, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
Three motorcyclists died over Memorial Day weekend, crash that killed Scherping occurred last weekend in Sherburne County.

“Per vehicle-miles traveled in 2021, motorcyclists were about 24 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to die in a motor vehicle crash and were 4 times more likely to be injured,” according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) The National Safety Council used NHTSA data for a report on 2021 motorcycle fatalities. Among the findings? Most fatalities were associated with two-vehicle crashes and occurred in urban settings on clear or cloudy days. And most riders were wearing a helmet and were not impaired by alcohol.
