Symptoms of a Listeria infection include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, other muscle stiffness, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Sometimes those symptoms are preceded by a stomachache, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea. Symptoms of a Listeria infection often appear within a day of exposure but can sometimes take as long as 70 days to develop. Pregnant women who contract Listeria infections can suffer a miscarriage or stillbirth even if they only experience mild flu-like symptoms.
