Legionnaires’ disease is a severe, often fatal form of bacterial pneumonia. People get these infections when they inhale water mist that is contaminated with Legionella bacteria. It is not spread through person-to-person contact. Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease, which include cough, headache, fever, and muscle aches, usually develop within two to 14 days of exposure.
Although Legionella bacteria are found in nature, they grow best in the warm, stagnant water of manmade structures. Hot tubs are common sources of outbreaks as are fountains and the plumbing systems of commercial buildings.
Water management plans can prevent the overgrowth of Legionella and are considered an industry standard for large buildings and healthcare settings, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department is currently investigating five cases of Legionnaires’s disease, a number the agency described as unusually high for the county. Water samples collected from area pools, hot tubs, and other locations have been submitted for analysis.
Built in 1973, The Creeks on Kirklevington, located at 3050 Kirklevington Drive in Lexington is a 141-unit apartment and condo complex with a pool and a hot tub.
