The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) has issued a public health alert for ground beef produced by Hawaii Big Island Beef that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. A recall was not issued because the products are no longer being sold, but FSIS is concerned some people may have these products in their freezers. Consumers who have these products at home should not eat them as E. coli can cause serious illness and death.
The potentially contaminated beef was produced on August 8, 2022, and packaged in a variety of sizes marked with the lot code 220808.
- 1-lb. vacuum-sealed packages of “Ground Beef (80) Fine 1#/pkg, case code “134R1”.

FSIS discovered the problem during a review of the company’s production records associated with a sample that tested positive for E. coli O157:H7.
