Pritzker Hageman Legionnaires’ Disease Lawyers Hired by Clients Sickened After Staying at Hilton Grand Islander in Waikiki

The Pritzker Hageman Legionnaires’ disease lawyers have been hired to represent several clients sickened in a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at the Hilton Grand Islander in Waikiki, HI. After traveling to Waikiki from states including Iowa and Texas, all of our clients contracted Legionnaires’ disease after staying at the hotel.

No one expects to contract a potentially deadly disease while on a beautiful tropical vacation. The Hilton Grand Islander could have taken simple steps to prevent the proliferation of the bacteria in their water system, yet visitors continued to fall ill month after month.

Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak at the Waikiki Hilton Grand Islander

The Hawaiʻi Department of Health (DOH) is investigating a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at The Grand Islander by Hilton Grand Vacations in Waikiki. Five non-residents, including our clients, tested positive for Legionella after staying at the hotel in June 2021, March 2022, and April 2022. The Grand Islander is working with the DOH on mitigation efforts, including installing point-of-use filters in the guest rooms to eliminate Legionella bacteria in the water.

Can I Sue a Hotel for Legionnaires’ Disease?

Yes. You can sue a hotel for Legionnaires’ disease if there is evidence that you contracted a Legionella infection during your stay.

Legionnaires’ disease is a severe and sometimes fatal form of pneumonia caused by inhaling water vapor contaminated by Legionella bacteria. Legionella bacteria grow and multiply in poorly sanitized water, hotel sink, shower, and pool water systems. This makes hotels a common setting for outbreaks, which is a danger that hotel and pool operators should be well aware of.

Water management plans are the industry standard for preventing Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks. When hotel and pool operators fail to follow or implement an effective water management plan, they put people at risk for contracting a deadly disease.
