A passenger died after a Metra BNSF train hit a semi-truck at the Prospect Avenue crossing in Clarendon Hills, IL. The crash injured four other people, including two passengers, a conductor, and an engineer.
Christina Lopez (72) was traveling from her hometown of Downers Grove to visit family when she died in the Metra crash. Her son-in-law told ABC 7 News, “We want to get the answers but also, more importantly, we want to do our part to help so that no family has to do and go through this tragedy again,” Klonowski said. It didn’t have to happen.”
At the time of the crash, a box truck that belonged to a moving company got stuck on the tracks before it collided with the train. A witness told local news that he saw three people jump out of the semi after the crossing gate came down and struck part of the truck.
Construction has been ongoing at the Prospect Avenue crossing for about a year. All inbound and outbound services on Metra’s BNSF Railway have been suspended while NTSB investigates. Metra recommends that riders use the Union Pacific West Line as an alternative.
