Velvet ice cream, under recall for Listeria risk, was sold at Kroger, Giant Eagle, Discount Drug Mart, and other stores. The recalled products were sold at stores in Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia. Consumers who have purchased these products should not eat them as Listeria can cause serious illness and death. Among pregnant women, it can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.
The Velvet ice cream Listeria recall also includes ice cream made at the Velvet plant in Utica, OH and sold under the brand names Buehler’s, Discount Drug Mart, Super Dip, Ruggle’s, Velvet, Whale of a Pail, and North Star Frog Spit. On April 26, Velvet recalled all of the products made its plant on or after March 24, 2021 after discovering Listeria during routine product testing. At the time of the recall, the company stated that it was unaware of any illnesses associated with the product.

Symptoms of a Listeria infection, called listeriosis, include high fever, stiff neck, other muscle stiffness, confusion, loss of balance, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
