Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include fever, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. These symptoms usually develop within six to 72 hours of eating contaminated food. Illinois residents sickened in this outbreak, who range in age from 12 to 72, said they first developed Salmonella symptoms on dates ranging from June 10, 2021, to June 15, 2021. They reported buying and eating BrightFarms brand Sunny Crunch salad in the days before they became ill.
After illnesses were reported, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) used patient interviews and shopper card data to conduct a traceback investigation and identified BrightFarms salads as the source of the outbreak.
On July 16, Bright Farms of Rochelle, IL issued a recall for a variety of packaged salads including Sunny Crunch. These salads are packaged in plastic clamshell containers. Some of them have “best by” dates of July 29, 2021. These salads were distributed to four states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Consumers who have these salads at home should not eat them.
In Illinois, these salads were sold at Walmart, Mariano’s Fresh Markets, Strack Van Till, Sullivan’s Foods, Caputo’s, and Jewel-Osco stores. In Wisconsin, the recalled salads were sold at Pick ‘n Save, Metro Market, Copps, Tadych’s, and Walmart. In Iowa, they were sold at Walmart. In Indiana, they were sold at Strack Van Till.
