El Abuelito Listeria Cheese Recall and Outbreak
All of the cheeses and sour creams recalled in connection with this outbreak were made by El Abueltio of Paterson, NJ. The company issued a recall for El Abuelito, Rio Lindo and Rio Grande queso fresco cheeses on February 19, 2021. Eight days later, the company expanded the recall to include all other cheeses made at its facility in Paterson including Quesillo and Requeson products sold under other brand names.
Although El Abuelito issued the recalls in February, it wasn’t until last week that consumers learned how widely the products were distributed throughout the country. Stores in 26 states sold the recalled cheeses, a much larger distribution than the seven states mentioned in the February recalls.
Consumers who have purchased these cheeses should not eat them as Listeria can cause serious illness and death. Ten of the 11 people sickened in this Listeria outbreak have been hospitalized and one of them has died.
