A Fresh Express Listeria salad recall includes all of the salad made at the company’s facility in Streamwood, IL. Genetic analysis shows these salads are linked to a Listeria outbreak under investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Since 2016, the CDC has identified at least 10 illnesses associated with this strain of Listeria monocytogenes. One death has been reported.
On December 17, 2021, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) issued a consumer advisory for Fresh Express Sweet Hearts Romaine Lettuce Sweet Butter Lettuce after a sample tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
The contaminated Fresh Express salad examined by MDARD was sold in a 9-oz. clear plastic bag with a green and red label with white lettering. The words “Product of USA” are located on the upper right corner of the front of the bag. The “use by” date and lot code are: “DEC 08 Z324B05A 16:04 07. (Complete Recall List)
On December 20, 2021, Fresh Express issued a recall for salads produced at its facility in Streamwood, IL. The recalled salads have product codes Z324 through Z350 and were sold under the Fresh Express brand name and store brand names at BJ’s, Weis Markets, ALDI, Albertsons, Walmart, GiantEagle, and ShopRite. The recalled store brands include Wellsley Farms, Weis, Simply Nature, Signature Farms, O Organics, Marketside, Market District, Giant Eagle, and Bowl & Basket. Detailed information is below.
The recalled salads were distributed to stores in CT, IA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, ND, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, WI, and to the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Manitoba.
Salad Contaminated With Listeria Can Lead to Serious, Possibly Deadly, Disease
Consumers who have purchased these salads should not eat them as Listeria can cause serious illness and death. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.
Consumers who have eaten a salad included in this recall should monitor themselves for symptoms of a Listeria infection which include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, muscle stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. These symptoms can take as long as 70 days to develop.
