A bicyclist was struck and killed by an unlicensed driver in Rosemount Monday afternoon. The fatal crash happened near the intersection of County Road 42 and West 145th Street. The man riding his bike, Father Denny Dempsey, died at the scene. The Catholic priest led the Church of the Risen Savior in Burnsville. A Parish trustee said Denny rode 10 miles on his bike to deliver Palm Sunday blessings while on a mission in Venezuela last spring.
Trejean D. Curry (26) of Minneapolis was arrested at the scene on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide. At the time of the crash, Curry was driving with a revoked license. Curry has been convicted 10 times for driving with a revoked license in Minnesota.
Minnesota Bicycle Deaths Increase as Dangerous Driving Skyrockets
Minnesota is on track to reach a record high of traffic deaths in 2021. Authorities say dangerous driving has skyrocketed during the pandemic, leading to an increase in bicycle and pedestrian deaths. Car accidents have killed seven bicyclists so far this year. Speeding is the largest factor, which has caused 40-percent more fatal crashes than this time last year. Safety officials encourage motorists to follow safe driving practices to help stop fatal crashes that are entirely preventable.
