Fresh peaches produced by Prima Wawona of Fresno, CA have been identified as the source of a nine-state Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 68 people, hospitalizing 14 of them. Many of the people sickened reported eating Wawona-brand bagged peaches they purchased at ALDI stores before they became ill. The peaches have also been recalled from Target, Costco, Sam’s Club, Walmart, Wegmans, Hannaford, Food Lion, Stop&Shop, Price Chopper, Russ Davis Wholesale, Kroger, Jay-C, King Soopers, City Market, Fry’s, Ralphs, Food 4 Less, Foods Co., and Smiths stores.

“This is the second time in recent years peaches produced by Wawona have been recalled for bacterial contamination,” said noted Food Safety Attorney Fred Pritzker. “In 2014, Wawona peaches and other stone fruits were recalled for Listeria.”
2014 Wawona Peaches Listeria Recall
On July 19, 2014, Wawona issued a recall for specific lots of peaches, nectarines, pluots and plums packed June 1 through July 12, 2014. That recall was expanded on July 31, 2014, to include all products packed in the Wawona Packing Co. facility from June 1, 2014, through July 17, 2014.
The recalled fruit was sold under a variety of brand names at dozens of stores including: Whole Foods, Cub Foods, Aldi, Kroger, Giants, Martins, Wegmans, Jay C, Dillons, Bakers, Gerbes, Food4Less, Fremont, King Soopers, City Market, Frys, Fred Meyer, Ralphs, Food4less, FoodsCo, QFC, Smith’s, Hannaford, QFC, Jay C, City Market, Bakers, Gerbes, Save-a-Lot, Stop-and-Shop, Big Y Foods, BJs Wholesale Club, Costco, Trader Joe’s, Sam’s Club and Walmart.
2020 Wawona Peaches Salmonella Recall
Prima Wawona has issued a recall for peaches it distributed throughout the U.S. The peaches sold in bulk may have stickers with the following numbers: 4037, 4038, 4044, 4401, 94037, 94038, 94044, 94401.

2020 Peaches Salmonella Outbreak
Wawona peaches contaminated with Salmonella have sickened 68 people in nine states. The number of cases reported from each state is: Iowa (8), Maryland (1), Michigan (17), Minnesota (23), New Jersey (4), New York (8), Pennsylvania (1), Virginia (3) and Wisconsin (3).
The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CD) have released maps of the states affected by the outbreak so far and the states that received initial shipments of the contaminated peaches.
The illnesses in this outbreak were reported between June 29, 2020, and August 3, 2020, among people who range in age from 1 to 92 years old.
