Multiple injuries and one fatality have been reported after a gas explosion involving multiple homes in Northwest Baltimore this morning. The explosion in the 6500 block of Reisterstown Rd trapped several people including children, according to fire officials. Three people have been rescued. All of them have critical injuries. A search and rescue operation is underway. Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. (BGE) has shut off the gas.
Neighbors said they smelled gas before the explosion.
In recent years, Baltimore has been besieged by gas leaks from aging pipes. Much of the city’s pipeline infrastructure is 70 years old and the joints are failing. By 2016, as many as many two dozen leaks were being reported each day, according to data from BGE cited in a report from the Baltimore Sun.
