This Salmonella outbreak has sickened at least 869 people in the United States and at least 116 people in 47 states have been hospitalized as of August 18th, with many more likely still unidentified. 339 people in Canada have also been sickened in this outbreak. Because of the way onions are harvested and transported, white onions, yellow onions and sweet onions produced by Thomson might also be affected.
Thomson onions are used for re-packaged retail sales and are sold under many different names by different retailers, Including Walmart, Costco, Kroger, ALDI, Food Lion and many other grocery and convince stores (a list of known recalled onion UPC codes and stores can be found here). In many cases the onions will not have “Thomson” on the label. These onions were also sold and used in commercial settings such as restaurants, hotels, hospitals and nursing homes as well as in “ready-to-eat” prepared foods in grocery stores and convenience stores. These foods include sandwiches, wraps, salads, salsa and dips. A recall for all Thomson onions was announced by the company on August 1st.
