Ground beef produced by Central Valley Meat Co. Inc. of Hanford, CA and sold under the brand name Stater Bros. is the source of a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 10 people in six states, one of whom has died. The company has issued a ground beef recall for meat sold in 1-pound, 2-pound and 10-pound chubs produced on July 23, 2019 with the “use by” date 08-14-19.
Health officials are concerned that some customers may still have the recalled beef in their freezers. They urge consumers who have purchased Stater Bros. ground beef to check recall information carefully.
Ground beef recalls are issued when the meat may be contaminated with a dangerous pathogen such as Listeria, Salmonella or E. coli. The Salmonella Dublin strain associated with this outbreak produced serious illness. The hospitalization rate is more than four times the average. The illnesses occurred between August 8, 2019, and September 22, 2019 among people ranging in age from 48 to 74 years old. Eight of the case-patients are male. The case total reported from each state is: California (2), Colorado (3), Iowa (1), Kansas (2), Oklahoma (1), and Texas (1). The fatality occurred in California.

The Central Valley Meat Co. recall includes the following products all with the Use By date 08-14-19 and all marked with the establishment number “EST. 6063A” next to the lot number inside the USDA mark of inspection.
1-lb. chub packages of “STATER BROS. 100% PURE GROUND BEEF 96% LEAN 4% FAT.” The lot code 2049 appears on the retail label, the lot code19204 appears on the case label.
2-lb. chub packages of “STATER BROS. 100% PURE GROUND BEEF 93% LEAN 7% FAT.” The lot code 2049 on the retail label, the lot code19204 appears on the case label.
20-lb. cases containing “STATER BROS 93/7 Ground Beef 10# Chub 10 Lb. Chubs/ 2 Count.” The lot 19204 on the case label.
