Shigellosis is a bacterial infection that occurs when someone eats food or drinks a beverage that is contaminated with fecal matter of an infected person. The best way to prevent the spread of disease is to stay home from work or school if you are sick and to carefully wash hands after using the bathroom or changing a diaper.

Symptoms of an infection include fever, nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps which usually last five to seven days. But in some cases, these symptoms can persist for four weeks or more. And it can take months before regular bowel habits return to normal.
