A house fire in Beaver Dam, WI killed an 85-year-old woman and injured her 92-year-old husband on Thanksgiving Day. Eleanor (“Ellie”) and Ruben Neumann were trapped in the basement of their home at N7295 Watercress Lane when firefighters arrived at the scene at about 10:00 P.M. The Daily Citizen reports that Eleanor’s son says she was found near a fire extinguisher and is believed to have been attempting to put out a fire caused by an electric blanket. Both Eleanor and Ruben were taken to Marshfield Medical Center. Eleanor died at the hospital. Ruben was taken to UW-Madison Burn Center, where he had surgery last Friday.
According to family, the Neumanns “always were happy.” Before the fire, the couple spent Thanksgiving with family, including their great-grandchild and four of their grandchildren. They were looking forward to celebrating Ruben’s 93rd birthday the next weekend.
