A fiery semi crash killed two truck drivers and injured several other people on I-94 in Wisconsin. The crash happened around 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday near Highway 20 in Caledonia. According to the Racine County Sheriff, a semi-trailer truck was traveling south when one of its tires blew out. The semi then hit a construction barrier, overcorrected, and crashed into a median that divided two directions of traffic. The impact of the crash pushed the median into northbound lanes, causing three other cars to crash. A second, northbound semi driver risked his life by swerving to avoid another collision. The maneuver caused that semi to careen over the side of the highway onto East Frontage Road below. The county sheriff called that driver a hero.

Both semi-trailers burst into flames and set other cars on fire. Witnesses say they heard what they thought was thunder and saw a “mushroom cloud of smoke.” Another reported seeing a fireball coming from one of the burning semi-trucks. Two victims were taken to area hospitals for burn injuries and broken bones. One was taken to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa and another to Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Regional Burn Center in Milwaukee.
