One person was killed in a crash on I-94 involving a box truck in the Dayton, Minnesota area.
A 2016 Freightliner box truck was traveling westbound on I-94 when it crossed through the median into on-coming eastbound traffic, causing a 6-vehicle crash. The 18-wheeler box truck drove through the median barrier, hit a Chevy Silverado pickup head-on, and then broadsided a Kia Optima on the passenger side. The driver of the Chevy pickup, Keven Allen Parker of Monticello, was tragically killed in the crash. He left behind a wife and two sons. The husband and wife in the 2013 Kia Optima were injured. The passenger in the Kia, Robyn Susann Grebinoski of Otsego, sustained life threatening injuries. She was airlifted to the hospital. A nurse who was thankfully on the scene, performed CPR on Ms. Grebinoski before she was airlifted.
The driver of the box truck said he was alert before and after the fatal crash, but indicated he may have had a medical condition that was a contributing factor. The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating. This is also an issue that attorneys for the families will independently investigate.
The effectiveness of the high-tension steel cable barrier that was breached also needs to be investigated. Both the design and manufacturing of this product needs to be looked analyzed to see if there are defects.
A thorough, independent investigation should involve all aspects of the crash and include analysis of physical evidence gathered at the scene, the structural integrity of the barrier, and any defects of the vehicles involved. In addition, the truck’s black box data needs to be obtained and analyzed.
