In New Mexico, ground beef recalled for Salmonella was sold at Sam’s Club, Walmart, Sprouts and Smith’s stores statewide. The recalled beef has been tied to a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 333 people in 28 states, hospitalizing 91 of them.
The recalled ground beef products linked to this outbreak were produced by JBS Tolleson Inc., of Tolleson, AZ and sold under a variety of brand names. To date, JBS has recalled 12 million pounds of beef sold in a variety of forms including pre-formed patties and chubs of various sizes.
In New Mexico, the brand names linked to this outbreak include Gourmet Burger and Showcase which were sold at Smith’s, Sprouts, Walmart and Sam’s Club stores statewide. Other stores may also have sold the ground beef products, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). But these four grocery store chains are the only retailers the agency has identified so far.

Case-patients sickened in this outbreak, who range in age from less than one year to 99 years old, reported onset of symptoms on dates ranging from August 5, 2018, to November 9, 2018. Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. These symptoms usually set in between 6 and 72 hours after exposure and last about a week. During interviews with health officials, 88 percent of case-patients reported eating ground beef at home before they became ill.
After some of these illnesses were traced back to JBS products, the company issued a recall for 6.9 million pounds of ground beef on October 4, 2018. The company expanded the recall to include an additional 5 million pounds of ground beef.
