Thirty people in New Mexico are part of the multi-state ground beef Salmonella outbreak linked to recalled beef products sold under a variety of brand names. And these illnesses have been longer-lasting and more severe than typical cases of salmonellosis, according to an outbreak update from the New Mexico Department of Health.
The average duration of illness for the New Mexico case-patients was 13 days. And eight of them (27 percent) were so sick they needed to be hospitalized. For the multi-state outbreak, the hospitalization is also 27 percent. Typically, symptoms of a Salmonella infection, which include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and fever, will last seven to days and 20 percent of patients require hospitalization.
State health officials urge consumers to reduce the risk of cross-contamination by washing hands with warm soapy water after headling raw meat and to thoroughly clean all work surfaces, dishes, and utensils used to prepare it. They are also asking consumers to check their freezers to see if they may have any of the recalled beef products.
