Ground Beef Salmonella Outbreak Doubles in Size, Again

For the second since it was announced on October 4, 2018, the ground beef Salmonella outbreak has doubled in size. The beef products were produced by JBS Tolleson Inc., of Tolleson, Arizona, and sold under a variety of brand names at stores nationwide.

The outbreak now includes 246 people in 25 states. Fifty-nine people have been hospitalized. That’s an increase of 126  since the last update on October 23, 2018. And the outbreak has expanded to three new states: Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Missouri. When the outbreak was announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on October 4, 2018, 57 people in 16 states had been sickened.

The case-patients, who range in age from less than one year old to 88 years old, reported onset-of-illness dates ranging from August 5, 2018, to October 16, 2018. Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. During interviews with health officials, case-patients reported eating ground beef they had prepared at home before they became ill.

The case count by state is: Arizona (42), California (66), Colorado (50), Connecticut (1), Hawaii (4), Idaho (3), Iowa (1), Illinois (1), Indiana (1), Kansas (1), Kentucky (1), Massachusetts (1), Minnesota (2), Missouri (3), Montana (8), New Mexico (9), Nevada (3), Ohio (9), Oklahoma (4), Oregon (1), South Dakota (6), Texas (13), Utah (9), Washington (3), and Wyoming (4)

JBS Beef Salmonella Recall

On October 4, 2018, JBS Tolleson issued a recall for almost 7 million pounds of ground beef and ground chuck products sold as burgers and in chubs of various sizes under a variety of brand names. Packaged between July 26, 2018 and Sept. 7, 2018, they have the establishment number “EST. 267” inside the USDA mark of inspection. Some of the brand names included in this recall are: Cedar River Farms Natural Beef, Comnor Perfect Choice, Gourmet Burger, Grass Run Farms Natural Beef, JBS Generic., Showcase and Showcase/Walmart.
