The Empire Kosher Chicken Salmonella Outbreak ended December 7, 2018, with 25 illnesses and one fatality. Six states reported illnesses linked to the consumption of Empire brand chicken sold whole and in parts. They are Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The death was reported from New York.
“This outbreak had a 50 percent hospitalization rate, that’s more than twice the average,” said Salmonella lawyer Eric Hageman. Eric is one of the lead attorneys of the Pritzker Hageman Salmonella Team which recently won a landmark $6.5 million verdict for a client sickened by chicken contaminated with Salmonella.

Empire Kosher Chicken Salmonella Outbreak
The six-state outbreak resulted in 11 hospitalizations. Case-patients, who ranged in age from less than one to 76 years old, reported onset-of-illness dates ranging from September 25, 2017, to August 13, 2018. But state and federal health officials did not discover the outbreak until June 2018.
During interviews with health officials, case-patients reported eating Empire Kosher brand chicken in the week before they became ill. Stool samples cultured from case-patients showed they were sickened by the strain Salmonella I 4,[5],12:i:- This strain was also found in samples of raw chicken collected at two facilities, one of which processes Empire Kosher brand chicken.
Empire Kosher issued a chicken recall on August 24, 2018. The recall included whole chicken and chicken parts produced from September 2017 to June 2018.
