Contaminated Stem Cell Injections
The CDC reported that contaminated stem cell products from cord blood were the source of the bacterial infections. Five different germs, including E.coli were found in the patients.
Investigators found bacteria in unopened vials provided by Liveyon LLC, a regenerative medicine distributor based in Yorba Linda, CA. The FDA issued a warning letter to Genetech Inc., the processor of the contaminated stem cell products, citing the following violations:
- Marketing stem cell products without FDA approval
- Significant deviations from manufacturing requirements that may have led to microbial contamination
- Deficient donor eligibility practices
- Uncontrolled environment
- Lack of control over components used in production
- Lack of defined areas or controlled system to prevent contamination and mix-ups
Liveyon voluntarily recalled all Genetech products it may have distributed in September.
Consumers should contact their doctors about problems with stem cell injections. Health care professionals and consumers should report any adverse events related to stem cell treatments to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program.
