No illnesses had been reported at the time of the recall. However, evidence of potential Salmonella contamination “was implicated in ongoing FDA and CDC investigations into multistate outbreaks of Salmonella infections, of which the clover seed supplier was notified,” the recall states.
The Miami Herald contacted a spokeswoman for NOW Health who told the paper that tests of the clover seeds conducted by the company, its supplier and the FDA did not show Salmonella contamination but “because our supplier sold these lots to a sprouter under investigation, out of an abundance of caution we are recalling this product.”
At the time of the recall, neither the FDA nor the CDC had announced a clover seed Salmonella outbreak.
The two recalled products of NOW Real Food Zesty Sprouting MIx were sold in 16 oz. packages with a UPC code of 733739072719 and either a Lot number #3031259 with “best by” date of 12/20 or, a Lot number #3038165 with “best by” date of 1/21. About 10,000 units of the recalled product have been distributed nationwide online and in retail stores since December 2017.
Consumers who have purchased this product should stop using it as Salmonella can cause serious, sometimes fatal infections. Young children, immune-compromised or elderly people are at particular risk. Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include nausea, diarrhea and fever. They usually develop within six to 72 hours of exposure and last about a week. But sometimes, when the infection travels from the intestines to the bloodstream, more serious illness can occur leading to arterial infections endocarditis, and arthritis.
