Two people are dead and four others are in critical condition after an early morning fire at Kozy Kottage, a Baltimore assisted living facility. Seven people were inside the two-story home, located in the 2800 block of Lawina Road in the Windsor Hills neighborhood, when the fire broke out around 2 a.m. this morning. One of the people inside the facility at the time of the fire did not require medical treatment.
It took fire crews about an hour and a half to get the fire at the home in northwest Baltimore under control. It’s not clear if all of the people inside the 2,500-square-foot home were residents of Kozy Kottage, nor is it clear if the structure, which was built in 1924, had functioning smoke alarms.

The fire is the city’s second this year with multiple fatalities. Six children died in a January 12, house fire in northeast Baltimore. Three of their siblings and their mother survived.
Katie Malone, a special assistant to U.S. Rep Elijah E. Cummings, lived with her husband William and their nine children at the home located in the 4200 block of Springwood Avenue. William was at work when the fire broke out just after 12:30 a.m. on Thursday. When fire crews arrived at the scene the home fully engulfed. A neighbor described the fire as an inferno. One of the children, an eight-year-old girl, helped to pull her mother and two of her brothers, ages 4 and 5 to safety.
