Three young people were killed on February 2, 2016 in Fresno County, California when their van was broadsided by a big rig dump truck pulling two trailers of rocks. The accident took place at East South and South Buttonwillow Avenues at 8:15 am.
Those killed were a 21-year-old man and 20-year-old woman from Clovis, California, and an 18-year-old woman from Fresno. They were working for the California Conservation Corps, which features natural resource protection and emergency response. The young people were on their way to an area near Lincoln School in Dinuba to replace grass with drought-tolerant plants.
Gofundme accounts have been set up for all three of the young people. The accounts for Rhonda Shackelford, Serena Guadarrama, and Justin Van Meter can be found online. Another passenger in the van, who was not named, was critically injured and was hospitalized at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. Two other people in the van received less serious injuries.
The van was traveling eastbound, and the big rig was traveling south. The driver of the van carrying the team stopped at a two-way stop sign and then pulled out in the path of the Peterbilt big rig dump truck. Weather conditions were clear at the time of the accident. The intersection was shut down most of the day while authorities investigated the accident.
