A Peterbilt dump truck was moving southbound along with a Freightliner dump truck. At the same time, a 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe was moving northbound. Two rear tires came off the Peterbilt dump truck and hit the Tahoe. The Tahoe spun out and went into the southbound lane, where it was hit by the Freightliner dump truck.
There were five people in the Tahoe. The driver, A 32-year-old woman from Beaumont, Texas, was taken to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in serious condition. Two of the four minor children in that vehicle were flown by a medical helicopter to Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston with serious injuries. The other two children were treated and released.
The driver of the Peterbilt dump truck was not injured. The driver of the Freightliner dump truck was also not injured, even though his vehicle left the highway and caught fire. Investigators think that the rear axle and tires on the Peterbilt dump truck came off the vehicle because of an equipment malfunction.
