A 43-year-old woman was killed Monday, January 11th when the 2015 Nissan Versa she was driving collided head-on with an 18-wheeler driven by a State Prison inmate. 1 According to Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 5:10 p.m on States Highway 7 at County Road 181, just east of Marlin. The initial investigation indicates that the big rig attempted to pass a slower vehicle in a no-passing zone and hit the Nissan head-on.
Pronounced dead at the scene was driver of the car. 2 The driver of the semi was not injured in the accident. The truck driver, a prisoner, was incarcerated in 2014 and is serving a five-year sentence for credit card fraud and theft. He earned his commercial driving license in a vocational program while incarcerated on another charge in 2009. He worked as a driver when he was out on parole and continued to drive after he was re-incarcerated.
The rig was one of a convoy of three trucks carrying freight. Two of the trucks were driven by inmates and a third truck was driven by a supervisor. The big rig driver involved in the crash was driving the lead vehicle.
The fatal crash remains under investigation.
