A prominent Tampa area businessman has died in a crash with a semi tractor trailer. The accident happened on April 5, 2016 in Apollo Beach on U.S. 41 at 8:35 p.m. A tractor-trailer was making a left turn onto the northbound lanes of the highway from Towaway Avenue and was blocking the southbound lanes. The semi truck driver was cited by the Florida state highway patrol for failure to yield the right of way.
The man killed was chairman emeritus of a Caterpillar construction-equipment dealership in Hillsborough County. He also served as chairman of the Tampa Port Authority and was a minority owner in the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team. He was a philanthropist, supporting the Florida Aquarium and the University of Florida. He was driving a 2015 Infinity Q70S that struck the big rig.
