A man was struck by a semi and killed Monday, January 18th near Jean. 1 The accident occurred at around 9:48 a.m. on I-15 near mile marker 11. The incident closed a portion of the highway for several hours. The identity of the man, who was declared dead at the scene, is being held pending notification of his family.
It is unclear why the man was walking along the highway. The big rig driver was driving from Utah to California and indicated that the man was pacing along the center median and then turned suddenly in front of the truck. 2 The accident remains under investigation.
Jean has no residents, but is a popular commercial center with several casino resorts and a thriving sky-driving school and air strip.

Pedestrian fatalities continue to rise each year in the United States, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, even as the number of most other types of traffic accidents decrease. In 2013, 4,735 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents. 3
