One road maintenance worker was killed and another was seriously injured on Monday, February 8 (2016), when a semi truck plowed into two road maintenance trucks on the US 131 off-ramp to M-115 in Wexford County’s Clam Lake Township. 1 Sheriff’s Office investigators are still trying to determine exactly what took place. The accident, which happened around 5:00 p.m., occurred around mile marker 176.
One worker was pronounced dead at the scene. The other worker was taken to Munson Healthcare Center in Cadillac, and then airlifted to a health care facility in Grand Rapids. His condition is not known at this time. The driver of the big rig suffered only minor injuries. He was arrested at the scene and charged with reckless driving causing death. 2
According to the Wexford County Sheriff’s Office, the workers were putting up informational highway signs to indicate that the exit offered food and lodging. Although road workers are less common during the winter, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Transportation, Northern Division, told Channel 32/Fox News that they employ road workers year round. 1
